Relationships Between Percentage of Forest Coverage and Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) of Cancers in all Prefectures in Japan

چکیده
Objectives: To explore whether forest coverage affects the rate of deaths due to cancers in Japan, we investigated the relationships between the percentage of forest coverage and standardized mortality ratios due to cancers in all prefectures in Japan. Methods: Data on the percentage of forest coverage in all prefectures in Japan were collected from the database of the Forestry Agency of Japan. Data on standardized mortality ratios (SMR) due to lung, stomach, kidney, and colon cancers in males and females, breast and uterine cancers in females, and prostate cancer in males, and data of smoking status of males and females in all prefectures in Japan were collected from the database of the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan. Human development index (HDI) was used as a parameter of the socioeconomic status of each prefecture. The correlation and partial correlation coefficients between the percentage of forest coverage and SMR of cancers, after controlling for the effects of smoking and the socioeconomic status, were calculated. Results: People living in areas with lower forest coverage had significantly higher SMR of cancers compared with the people living in areas with higher forest coverage. There were significant inverse correlations between the percentage of forest coverage and the SMR of lung, breast, and uterine cancers in females, and the SMR of prostate, kidney, and colon cancers in males in all prefectures in Japan, even after the effects of smoking and socioeconomic status were factored in. Conclusions: These findings indicate that increased forest coverage may partially contribute to a decrease in mortality due to cancers in Japan.

Geographic difference of mortality of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Japan.
BACKGROUND The geographic mortality difference of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is still unclear in Japan. METHODS Using vital statistics of Japan for 6 year period between 1999 and 2004 officially published by the government, we observed the mortality from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (ICD-10th: A81.0 and A81.8) by prefecture. Standardized mortality ratios were calculated for the 47 prefectures. ...

To test Joossens's hypothesis that salt is a common cause of both cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and stomach cancer (SC), the standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) of SC and CVD were related to urinary Na and K and urinary Na/creatinine (Cr), K/Cr, and Na/K ratios. Fifty spot urine of females between 40 to 69 years was collected from each of 169 municipalities (88 urban and 81 rural) covering all...
متن کاملMortality after exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated dibenzofurans: a 40-year follow-up study of Yusho patients.
A 40-year follow-up study was conducted to examine mortality among 1,664 patients in Japan suffering from "Yusho," a disease caused by ingestion of rice oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated dibenzofurans. To evaluate the effects of exposure on mortality, the authors calculated standardized mortality ratios. National mortality rates for major causes of death were u...

Background and purpose: Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Iran. Mazandaran and Golestan provinces, especially in northern countries, have a high incidence of gastrointestinal cancer. Therefore, we aimed to find the geographic distribution of standardized mortality rates of this disease and to mark differences between the cities on a map. Materials and methods: The data related to t...
متن کاملOriginal Contribution Cause-specific Mortality of Grand Multiparous Women in Finland
Knowledge is limited on mortality of grand multiparous women ( 5 deliveries), whose hormonal, metabolic, and social conditions differ from the average. The authors studied overall and cause-specific mortality in 1974–2001 among 87,922 grand multiparous women including 3,678 grand grand multiparous women ( 10 deliveries) in Finland. Standardized mortality ratios were defined as ratios of observe...
